Welcome to the Virginia Reining
Horse Youth Association (VRHYA) page! This association is a new addition to the Virginia Reining Horse
Association in 2008 and an affiliate organization to the National
Reining Horse Youth Association. We hope that you’ll find the
information on this page interesting and useful!

The VRHYA was formed to give
Virginia youth who are interested in the sport of reining a club to meet
other reining youth, to learn more about the sport of reining, and to
provide community service. This organization also serves as a relay for
information from the national level to our youth, supports our youth in
affiliate and USEF competitions, and provides information about
scholarship opportunities.

VRHyA member and horse
enthusiast, Shannon Leggett who is attending her first year at St.
Andrews Presbyterian College, in Laurinburg, N.C. where she is
studying Pre-Veterinary Science is continuing her equine show
career. Shannon’s parents Craig & Carol Leggett, brother Nolan, and
grandparents along with her ”adoptive” parents Glen & Stephanie
Askins are very proud of her. Shannon recently competed at the
college October 18-19, 2008. On Saturday she competed in the Novice
Western Horsemanship Class placing third out of eight entries riding
“Lark”. On Sunday she rode “Emma” and placed first in the class
competing against seven other participants. In her second show
November 1-2, 2008 at Martin County Community College she once again
placed first and third in her Western Horsemanship Class.
Shannon is exposed to a wide variety of horses riding at all levels
and she is excelling. She donated her reining horse Ted D Bear to
the college and he is being used to help students learn to rein and
will also be used in competition. Her coach is Carla Wennberg
who is an A.Q.H.A Professional horsewoman and holds judges cards in
several different associations including N.R.H.A. Shannon is
22 points into the 35 points she needs to graduate to the Advanced
Horsemanship Level. Her next scheduled show is February 2009.
Congratulations, Shannon
